Groundwork on George street moves up a gear

15 January 2016

Weekend work in the northern section of George Street continues this month, taking advantage of the lower levels of traffic in the CBD to forge ahead with construction of the CBD and South East Light Rail.

Conducting this essential work during quieter periods ensures light rail construction impacts are kept to a minimum. Road and lane closures will be in place so drivers are advised to plan their travel in advance – and remember to check out our interactive maps for the best routes around the city.

From 10pm Friday 15 January to 5am Monday 18 January, George Street will operate one lane in each direction on the eastern side of the road between Hunter and Bond streets, as utility investigation and relocation work continues following initial work at this intersection last weekend.

Hunter Street will be reduced to one lane westbound between Pitt and George streets and King Street will be reduced to two lanes between York and George streets (during night works 10pm-5am King Street will be reduced to one lane between York and George streets).

In addition, from 10pm Friday 15 January until 10pm Saturday 16 January, Margaret Street will be closed in both directions between Wynyard lane and George Street and closed eastbound between York and Carrington streets. From 10pm Saturday 16 January until 5am Monday 18 January:

Margaret Street will have one lane closed eastbound between Wynyard lane and George Street.

Further utility relocation work will be carried out from 10pm Friday to 5am Monday 22 - 25 January and 29 January to 1 February at the following intersections:

  • George and King streets – two lanes of traffic will be available during the day and only one lane available at night.
  • George and Jamison / Bond streets – Jamison Street will be closed at George Street with access provided from York Street; Bond Street will be closed at George Street with Bond Street turned into two-way traffic for the duration of the works.

Activities taking place include utility investigations and work, modification of Ausgrid electrical pits and road pavement.

Additional work will be carried out by Ausgrid on George Street this month between Jamison and Bond streets. This is not part of the light rail intersection works.

Access for local traffic and emergency services will be maintained at all times; for information on traffic impacts, see our essential guide to summer road closures. Don’t forget to plan your travel and check Live Traffic before you set off.

George Street remains permanently closed to traffic between King and Park streets.
