New light rail tracks in the CBD1 May 2017
The light rail project has been forging ahead in April, with new light rail tracks installed on George Street in zone five, near Market Street, and zone six outside the Queen Victoria Building. More track was also installed in zone two, near Circular Quay, where track work is nearing completion.
Over the Easter break, the construction team took advantage of lower traffic volumes and the long weekend to install track at the intersection of George Street with Bridge and Grosvenor Streets. After a rolling program of weekend traffic closures at this intersection, the installation of track is a significant achievement.
The delivery of light rail track symbolises the completion of a huge amount of painstaking utility work at these locations, and a significant milestone for light rail in the city centre.
From Friday 28 April, work started in zone 13, Eddy Avenue between Pitt and Elizabeth Streets. The existing coach bays on Eddy Avenue have now been relocated to the Western Forecourt of Central Station. The forecourt will also be used for Sydney Trains rail replacement buses and NSW Trainlink rail replacement coaches. There will be no changes to Pitt Street coach operations.
Construction will start in zone one, Circular Quay east of George Street, from Friday 5 May. We are working closely with stakeholders in the area in preparation for the changes.
